That's just for heating the water, boiling itself takes substantially more energy, 540 calories per gram so converted to Joules for a cup we get substantially more energy than was required to heat it to 100 C. Assuming the water is 25 degrees for simplicity then just to heat it to the boiling point requires 17,738 calories and there's 4.184 Joules in a calorie so 74.2 kJ of energy.

If anyone complains, I'd tell them to stand back. If you've got sand/dirt, start burying the metal bucket so it can't breath. That said - I would not do this with a pack that isn't already actively burning. The cell that's burning will burn out, if you can stop the rest of the pack going with it, you limit how much worse it's going to get. So the idea is to assume that you've pretty much given up on the cell that's actively failing, and move on to managing the temperature of adjacent cells. The second biggest issue is that they burn hot enough to easily affect neighbouring cells, in a cascade failure / thermal runaway. So the biggest issue with burning lithium batteries is obviously that they burn very actively. everything I can find claims it's from 2009 but looks like it's from the 80s.įrom what I can recall - and I would love to be corrected/updated, I'm 40 and memtest64 would mark me failed - they recommended halon extinguishers for the active fire (I assume this is aviation-specific, we can't get halon recharges here anymore), followed by water, beverages, anything to crash the temperature.
